Big Drums, oil, 9” x 12”, by E. Melinda Morrison (b.1955)

Melinda picked up her first paintbrush at the age of fourteen studying under a local landscape artist in Tyler, Texas, her hometown. But, it was not until college that she fell in love with drawing, painting and sculpting the human figure.

Melinda attended University of Texas at Tyler graduating with a B.A. in Fine Arts. Her passion for pursuing her fine art took a backseat to the world of advertising, spending 16 years in Dallas, Texas working as a successful graphic designer and art director. While owning her own print advertising agency for six years, Melinda was recognized for her print design in publications and annual reports in national competitions.

After advertising, Melinda moved into corporate recruiting management for technology firms but found her need for creativity growing. In 1999, with her discovery of the Art Students League of Denver, she took a class with Denver artist, Rob Gratiot. Rob’s recognition of her natural painting abilities was just enough to peak Melinda’s desire in improving her skills.
Over the next five years, Melinda continued to study painting under the guidance of Colorado artists Kim English and Kevin Weckbach. Her passion for painting grew and her desire to paint full-time ignited. In 2003, Melinda embarked on the journey of a professional art career. Since that decision, she showed in major regional and local shows in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado gaining recognition for her figurative and landscape paintings.

Melinda is an associated member of Oil Painters of America (OPA) .Melinda is beginning a new series of oil paintings of the Santa Fe Symphony, one of which will grace the cover of the 2008-9 25th Anniversary season of the orchestra.
